New Twist as Alleged Mount Kenya Political Connection Surfaces in Maureen Kinyua Death Case

The family of late blogger Maureen Gathigia Kinyua has formally petitioned the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) to launch a fresh inquest into her 2019 death, which they insist was not a road accident as officially recorded.

Lawyers representing the family submitted the request on March 19, 2026, citing six reasons suggesting the death was a planned killing disguised as a boda boda accident in Mataga. Her father, James Kinyua Macharia, engaged legal counsel armed with witness accounts and evidence contradicting the official narrative.

The letter claims Maureen was lured to Mataga by a female friend allegedly connected to a senior political figure from Mount Kenya.

When she attempted to leave, the friend reportedly called Maureen’s brother, a boda boda rider, providing instructions on where to drop her. The rider disappeared immediately after the incident, returning only when summoned by the area base commander, indicating prior coordination.

The motorcycle involved had no dents, undermining the accident story, while Maureen reportedly had a forehead penetration wound absent from the official autopsy.

Suspicion deepened after the wife of the senior political figure briefly visited the scene, and Maureen’s mobile phone went missing, possibly containing incriminating communication. The case has resurfaced nearly seven years later as the family demands answers, accountability, and justice.

The controversy is heightened by claims linking DCP Party leader and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to the death, following tensions between the United Opposition and Kenya Kwanza administration.

President William Ruto, during a March 17 development tour in Busia County, alleged Gachagua’s involvement, which the latter has denied, maintaining the death resulted from a hit-and-run near Sagana Catholic Church on May 24, 2019.

Lawyers now urge the ODPP to treat the matter as potential homicide, calling for a fresh investigation, review of the flawed autopsy, and forensic re-examination of the original evidence.
