The Mombasa County Government on Thursday, March 19, announced a three-day suspension of construction and excavation activities as part of emergency measures to address anticipated heavy rainfall.
In a public notice, County Secretary and Head of Public Service Jeizan Faruk said the directive takes immediate effect and will remain in force for three days, after which a review will be conducted.
Faruk explained that the move aligns with preparedness efforts following an advisory issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department warning of intense rainfall between March 20 and 23.
“All construction and excavation activities within the County are hereby suspended for a period of three days, effective immediately. A review will be conducted thereafter,” the notice stated.
The county identified Jomvu, Kisauni and Nyali as high-risk areas likely to experience flooding during the peak of the rains.
To strengthen response capacity, emergency centres have been set up at Port Reitz Hospital and Utange Hospital. Rescue equipment, including boats, has also been pre-positioned to support operations in affected areas.
Faruk added that the county is working closely with key agencies, including the Kenya Red Cross, Kenya Forest Service and Kenya Wildlife Service, to enhance emergency preparedness.
In addition, the county is collaborating with the Kenya National Highways Authority to fast-track drainage clearance and maintenance along the Mombasa-Malindi Road to reduce flood risks.
Earlier, the Kenya Meteorological Department warned that heavy rainfall is expected across 46 counties, with a high likelihood of flooding.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen assured the public that the government is prepared to respond, while urging residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions during the period.
