Boost to Gachagua as 10 UDA Politicians Join DCP

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has received a major political boost after 10 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) from Kirinyaga defected from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and joined the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP).

In a statement issued on Thursday, March 11, 2026, Gachagua said the ward representatives visited him at his Wamunyoro residence where they formally declared their decision to join his political outfit. The former deputy president said the leaders informed him that their voters had instructed them to align with DCP and take a firm stand against what they termed as oppression and persecution of Kenyans.

According to Gachagua, the MCAs said they could no longer remain in a political formation that does not reflect the interests and wishes of the people who elected them. He praised them for making a bold political move and choosing to represent the voice of their constituents.

Gachagua further noted that the decision by the leaders reflects the growing political mood on the ground as the country begins positioning itself ahead of the next General Election. He urged them to remain firm in their decision despite possible intimidation or pressure from political rivals.

“This morning, I received a delegation of 10 Members of the County Assembly from Kirinyaga who visited me at my Wamunyoro residence,” Gachagua said. “They conveyed that their voters had instructed them to join the DCP party and stand as defenders of the community by abandoning those who persecute and oppress Kenyans.”

He added that he commended the MCAs for aligning themselves with the wishes of their voters as the country prepares for the next electoral cycle.

The leaders who joined DCP include Jeremiah Makimi of Kariti Ward, Isaiah Mbogo of Kabare Ward, Mutithi Ward Deputy Speaker Jinaro Jemumo, Timothy Kariuki-Sedi of Njukini Ward, Thomas Mwangi of Mukure Ward, Fredrick Maina Karimi of Inoi Ward, Geoffrey Murimi of Kiine Ward, Peter Njiru-Weche of Wamumu Ward, Peter Karinga of Tebere Ward and James Wambu of Kangai Ward.

Their defection adds to other Kirinyaga MCAs who had earlier aligned themselves with Gachagua’s political camp. These include David Mathenge of Baragwi Ward, Kawangui of Mutira Ward and Eric Muchina of Kerugoya Town Ward.

The development comes at a time when Gachagua is preparing for a three-day political tour of Kirinyaga County, a region considered politically strategic within the Mount Kenya bloc. The tour is expected to strengthen his growing political influence in the area as he continues to consolidate support ahead of future political contests.
