KUPPET Threatens to Boycott National Exams Over Alleged Mistreatment by KNEC

Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has warned of a potential disruption to this year’s national examinations, calling on teachers to boycott marking and supervision in protest of alleged mistreatment by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).

KUPPET National Chairperson Omboko Milemba, speaking on NTV on Tuesday, March 24, accused KNEC of underpaying teachers involved in administering exams. He claimed some examiners are paid as little as Ksh30 per script—an amount he described as exploitative and unsustainable amid the rising cost of living.

Milemba also raised concerns about delayed payments, noting that some teachers who marked the 2025 national exams are yet to receive their dues months later. “KNEC is underpaying examiners. Could you imagine they marked scripts at the end of last year and have not been paid?” he said.

The union leader urged teachers to stand firm on their rights, calling for a formal agreement with KNEC on payments before the exercise begins. He further demanded a comprehensive audit of funds allocated to the Ministry of Education and the Teachers Service Commission, questioning the use of billions of shillings.

Milemba suggested that consolidating bursary funds and streamlining expenditures could help meet financial obligations, including the Ksh2.5 billion needed monthly to absorb 44,000 intern teachers on permanent and pensionable terms.
