Gospel Artist Mary Claire Previously Assaulted by Suspected Lover Before Acid Attack, Court Hears

New details have emerged in the investigation into the acid attack on gospel artist Mary Claire, implicating her suspected estranged lover, Elvis Opiyo, in a prior assault.

During his arraignment at Kibera Law Courts on Monday, March 23, Opiyo faced charges for the attempted murder that occurred along Ngong Road near Prestige Plaza, as well as for an earlier assault dating back to November 25, 2025. Court documents reveal that Claire had previously reported being assaulted and filed a police complaint, but no action was taken against Opiyo at the time, raising questions about the handling of the initial case.

Investigators have also cited CCTV footage that places Opiyo at the hospital shortly after Claire was rushed for first aid. Claire was recorded entering Equity Afya Hospital at around 4:04 pm, and approximately an hour later, Opiyo allegedly arrived at the same facility before leaving shortly after. Police say his presence raises suspicion of prior knowledge or involvement in the attack.

Following the arraignment, the court ordered that Opiyo remain in custody for five days to allow detectives time to complete investigations. Authorities are working to establish whether he communicated with Claire before the attack or coordinated with the individual believed to have carried out the acid assault.
