Woman Surrenders After Killing Son Inside Lodging in Makueni

A woman has surrendered to police after allegedly killing her 11-year-old son in Mumbuni, Makueni County. The incident occurred on March 22. Her two other children, aged six and three, were spared.

Police said the woman checked into a lodging with her three children on the night of March 21. The following day, she left briefly to buy toothpaste but delayed returning. The facility manager went to check the room after noticing her delay.

Inside, the manager found the 11-year-old unconscious on the bed. The two younger children were seated next to him, seemingly unaware of his death. Police confirmed the boy was a Grade 4 pupil at Miau Primary School.

Visible marks on his neck suggested strangulation as the cause of death. The boy’s body was moved to the mortuary pending a postmortem examination. Family members took custody of the two younger children.

The mother later surrendered at Machakos Police Station, several kilometres from the scene. She is being held pending transfer to Makueni for processing and possible arraignment. Authorities have launched a full investigation into the incident.

Police aim to determine the motive behind the killing. A team will also conduct psychiatric assessments as part of the probe. Investigators will examine the woman’s mental state before and during the incident.

The case has shocked residents and raised concerns over child safety in lodgings. Officials urge the public to report suspicious behaviour to prevent similar tragedies. Police continue gathering evidence and witness statements to complete the ongoing investigation.
