Fresh violence has erupted in Samburu County after armed raiders attacked herders in Samburu West on Saturday. The incident happened less than two days after Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen toured the region and announced new anti-banditry measures.

Preliminary reports indicate that about forty armed attackers crossed into Samburu from neighbouring Baringo County before targeting local herders. The group reportedly attempted to steal livestock before security officers responded to the scene.

Three Civilians Lose Lives During Attack

The attack took place at Nolkera Village, where the armed group confronted residents grazing their animals. Three civilians lost their lives before security teams arrived to confront the attackers.

Officers from the Kenya Defence Forces and the General Service Unit responded from nearby security camps. A gunfight followed, leaving one suspected bandit dead as security personnel regained control of the area.

Security Officers Recover Stolen Livestock

Security teams successfully recovered all livestock that the attackers had attempted to drive away during the raid. The operation prevented the armed group from escaping with the stolen animals after the confrontation.

Authorities moved the bodies of the three civilians and the suspected bandit to Samburu County Referral Hospital. Officials will conduct postmortem examinations as investigations into the attack continue.

Residents Raise Fresh Security Concerns

The latest incident has renewed concerns among residents over persistent bandit attacks despite increased security deployments. Some locals questioned whether ongoing operations have reduced the threat posed by armed criminal groups.

The attack occurred shortly after Murkomen visited Samburu to assess the region's security situation. During the visit, he met local leaders and security officials before outlining additional measures against banditry.

Murkomen Announces Tougher Crackdown

The Interior Cabinet Secretary said the government would intensify efforts to eliminate remaining criminal groups operating across the region. He also urged armed individuals in Samburu, Baringo, and Isiolo counties to surrender their weapons voluntarily.

Murkomen warned that security agencies would launch fresh operations against those refusing to disarm before the planned crackdown. He also announced plans to vet National Police Reservists while expanding roads, security facilities, and mobile network coverage to strengthen future operations.
