Tension remains high in Mwingi tonight after a group of Somali traders reportedly fled their homes and sought refuge at the local police station following the alleged looting of their businesses earlier in the day.
According to accounts shared by the affected traders and reported to the media, several shops owned by Somali businesspeople were broken into and looted in the town.
The traders claim that the incidents occurred while police officers were present in the area, but no immediate action was taken to stop the destruction or arrest those involved.
By nightfall, the frightened traders, together with their wives and children, had gathered outside the Mwingi police station seeking protection.
Many said they no longer felt safe in their homes or business premises following the day’s events.
Some of the affected individuals alleged that the attacks appeared coordinated and expressed concern over what they described as a lack of adequate security response.
They are now calling on authorities to restore order, protect businesses, and ensure accountability for those responsible.
Police have yet to issue a detailed public statement regarding the alleged looting or the claims that officers were present but did not intervene.
