Several people were injured on Friday, March 20, 2026, after a violent dispute erupted between two co-wives over the burial of their husband in Gesagero village, Kisii County.
Police at Kegogi Station reported that Alice Kemunto and Esther Otondo Moriasi were both married to the late Joseph Moriasi, who died at 56. The two had earlier moved to court seeking guidance on who should conduct the burial.
The court advised them to reach a mutual agreement. The family later decided that the burial would take place at the home of the first wife, and the body was transported there on Friday.
However, the situation escalated when the second wife allegedly arrived with a group of youths armed with crude weapons. They intercepted the hearse and forcefully took control of the body.
The group proceeded to bury the deceased at the second wife’s home. During the chaos, they reportedly set fire to the house of the deceased’s brother, destroying property of unknown value. A cow was also stolen.
Several people were injured and rushed to Kegogi Hospital, while others were referred to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital. Police have launched investigations.
