Mudavadi Reveals Names of Two Kenyans Held as Prisoners of War in Ukraine

Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Affairs CS Musalia Mudavadi confirmed the government has identified two detained Kenyans. He said Ukrainian authorities are holding Evans Kibet and Macharia Willis Muniu as prisoners of war.

Mudavadi issued the statement from Moscow during ongoing diplomatic engagements with Russian authorities on the matter. He noted the government is actively verifying details surrounding their involvement in the conflict.

Government Seeks Repatriation Deal

The government is now pursuing diplomatic arrangements aimed at securing the safe return of the detained Kenyans. Mudavadi said he formally requested Russian authorities to explore possible transfer mechanisms for the prisoners.

He explained that a transfer to the Russian Federation could ease coordination and support eventual repatriation back to Kenya. Officials believe structured diplomatic engagement will provide a clear pathway toward resolving the situation.

Rising Concern Over Kenyan Involvement

The disclosure comes as authorities continue assessing the scale of Kenyan involvement in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs estimates that 252 Kenyans have been conscripted into Russian operations.

Mudavadi said the figures highlight a growing concern over recruitment and participation of Kenyan nationals in foreign conflicts. He added that authorities are intensifying efforts to track and verify all affected individuals.

Former Security Officers Among Recruits

Reports indicate that some recruited individuals previously served in Kenya’s disciplined forces across various institutions. These include the Kenya Defence Forces, National Police Service, National Youth Service, and Kenya Prisons Service.

Officials believe prior training and experience may have influenced their recruitment into foreign military operations. Authorities continue investigating how recruitment networks targeted and enlisted these individuals.

Ongoing Monitoring and Repatriation Efforts

Kenya’s diplomatic mission in Moscow continues monitoring developments while coordinating assistance for affected citizens. Officials have already facilitated the safe return of 44 Kenyans who had been involved.

Mudavadi confirmed the government remains committed to protecting citizens abroad through sustained diplomatic engagement and structured repatriation efforts.
