Yvonne Chepkurui Kones has announced her intention to contest the Bomet senatorial seat ahead of the 2027 elections. Her entry sets up a high-stakes political contest in Bomet County.

She is married to Nelson Koech, popularly known as Sonko. Her decision has sparked debate over why she is contesting in Bomet instead of her natal Kericho County.

Kones comes from a powerful political family. She is the daughter of the late Kipkalia Kones and the former Bomet East MP Beatrice Kones.

Observers say her family influence could shape the race significantly. However, political tensions are also rising due to perceived rivalries involving her husband’s allies in Kericho politics.

The contest is already attracting major figures. Incumbent Senator Hillary Sigei and Governor Hillary Barchok are expected to play key roles in the race.

Former Governor Isaac Ruto has reportedly aligned with Barchok, while Sigei is backing former senator Christopher Langat for the governorship.

Her bid also faces cultural resistance, with critics citing traditional norms on married daughters returning to contest leadership in maternal homes. Similar arguments were previously used in the region’s political history.

The emerging contest signals an intense and closely watched political battle in Bomet as alignments continue to take shape ahead of 2027.
