Francis Atwoli Re-elected Again After Serving For 25 Years as COTU Secretary General

Veteran trade union leader Francis Atwoli has been re-elected as Secretary General of Central Organisation of Trade Unions Kenya during a delegates’ meeting held in Kisumu on Saturday, March 14.

Atwoli, who has led the country’s largest labour federation since 2001, secured another term in office during the meeting held at Tom Mboya Labour College. His re-election marks his sixth consecutive term at the helm of the powerful workers’ umbrella body.

The gathering attracted at least 250 delegates representing 47 affiliated workers’ unions from across the country. Delegates participated in the voting process that ultimately returned Atwoli to the position without opposition.

Celebrations erupted immediately after the announcement of the results, with delegates reportedly breaking into dance to mark his victory. Supporters described the outcome as a show of confidence in the veteran labour leader’s experience and long service within the union movement.

Atwoli’s continued leadership comes at a time when Kenyan workers face mounting economic challenges, including rising living costs and limited employment opportunities. Labour unions have increasingly voiced concerns over job losses and the impact of economic pressures on workers across different sectors.

Despite his long tenure, Atwoli’s leadership has recently attracted criticism from some quarters within the labour movement. Critics have argued that the federation needs fresh leadership and new ideas to address emerging labour issues affecting workers in the country.

Speaking after his victory, Atwoli said the renewed mandate reflected the trust union members continue to place in his leadership. He pledged to continue championing the rights and welfare of workers while strengthening collective bargaining efforts across the country.

Supporters within the labour movement, however, defended his leadership, citing his deep understanding of union matters and his long track record in advocating for workers’ rights.

As he begins his sixth term, attention will now shift to how the federation plans to address critical labour issues, including youth unemployment and workers’ welfare in an increasingly challenging economic environment.
