President William Ruto has taken an apparent jab at Nairobi senator Edwin Sifuna and his allies over their criticism of government development projects.

Ruto’s comments come weeks after Sifuna criticised what he termed as the government’s focus on "shiny projects," warning that such developments risk overshadowing urgent issues affecting ordinary Kenyans.

While addressing the Senate, Sifuna urged citizens not to be distracted by high-profile infrastructure projects such as railways and stadiums, arguing that the government should prioritise security, healthcare, and basic services.

He pointed to a series of security concerns, saying these incidents expose gaps in the government’s ability to protect citizens.

During the Labour Day celebrations held in Vihiga County on Thursday, May 1, Ruto defended his administration’s infrastructure agenda.

The president was particularly upbeat over the ongoing road and railway expansions, insisting they are central to Kenya’s economic transformation.

Ruto outlined plans to extend key transport corridors, including the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) and a major highway project linking Nairobi to western Kenya.

According to him, the first phase of the road project is set to reach Mau Summit, with further expansion expected before the end of the year.

He said the next phase will stretch from Mau Summit through Eldoret to Kakamega and finally to Malaba, while an alternative route will connect Kericho to Kisumu.
