William Ruto has announced a 12 per cent increase in general wages and a 15 per cent rise for agricultural workers. He made the announcement during Labour Day celebrations held in Vihiga County.
Ruto said the move followed appeals from workers through the Central Organisation of Trade Unions. The adjustment aims to cushion workers against the rising cost of living.
The President stated that the 12 per cent increment will apply broadly across sectors. The 15 per cent adjustment will specifically target workers in agriculture.
He noted that the decision seeks to improve earnings for millions of workers in both formal and informal employment. The directive is expected to influence minimum wage structures across the country.
Francis Atwoli has consistently pushed for wage reviews. He cited increased costs of food, fuel, and housing as key pressures facing workers.
The announcement marks a major highlight of this year’s Labour Day celebrations. It also signals government efforts to respond to economic concerns raised by workers and unions.
