Treasury CS John Mbadi was formally crowned as a Luo Elder by the Onagi Council of Elders drawn from Nairobi and neighbouring counties on May 6 in a colourful ceremony that underscored his growing political ambitions ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Elders from the council praised Mbadi's leadership integrity and strategic position within President William Ruto's government. They affirmed his role as a key bridge between the Luo community and the national government while urging unity and greater community participation in policy making.
Mbadi used the occasion to emphasise inclusive governance and reiterated his commitment to advancing development projects benefiting the Luo diaspora in Nairobi and surrounding counties. He also pledged to facilitate further high-level engagements between the community and the national executive.
The crowning comes months after Mbadi declared himself the senior-most Luo politician in government following the passing of Raila Odinga in late 2025. He has since openly positioned himself as a natural successor to carry forward Luo Nyanza's political aspirations in the post-Raila era.
Political analysts say the elder crowning strengthens Mbadi's grassroots legitimacy particularly among urban Luo communities in Nairobi Kiambu and Nakuru. His dual standing as a technocrat managing Kenya's economy and an emerging cultural leader places him in a uniquely powerful position heading into 2027.
The Onagi elders have previously played a central role in mediating rifts between ODM figures including Edwin Sifuna James Orengo and Babu Owino. Mbadi's continued engagement with the council signals a deliberate strategy to consolidate community support through traditional institutions.
Critics however question the timing of the recognition saying it is more about political positioning than genuine cultural observance as Kenya enters the pre-election season.
