Why The Govt Wants All Kenyans To Migrate To The USB Type C Charger

Latest reports indicate that the government is considering phasing out other types of charging cables and moving toward the use of USB Type-C chargers.

The directive, linked to the Communications Authority of Kenya, is aimed at promoting standardization and encouraging the adoption of newer technology in the country.

If implemented, the move could gradually push out budget non-smartphones, commonly known as kabambe, from the market, as many of them do not support USB Type-C. This would likely lead to increased uptake of newer phone models.

The proposal is intended to align Kenya with modern technological standards and reduce reliance on outdated systems that are slowly being phased out globally.

However, the development has sparked mixed reactions among Kenyans. Some support the move, citing the need to embrace current technology, while others oppose it, arguing that many people cannot afford newer devices and should continue using existing phones.

A similar situation occurred during the transition from analog to digital television under Fred Matiang'i. Despite initial resistance, the shift was eventually implemented and later viewed positively by many.

The question remains whether a similar transition in mobile devices would be practical or fair under current conditions.
