Mistaken transfers through M-Pesa are common, and once you send money, reversing it is not straightforward. If the recipient refuses to cooperate, follow these five steps:
1. Confirm Transaction Details
Check the SMS receipt carefully. Verify the recipient’s number, amount sent, date, and transaction code. If you get this wrong, every step you take afterward will be useless.
2. Contact the Recipient Directly
Call or text the number you sent money to. Be clear and direct—explain the mistake and request a reversal. Some people will cooperate, but don’t assume goodwill.
3. Report to an M-Pesa Agent or Safaricom Shop
If the recipient refuses, go straight to an agent or a Safaricom shop. Provide all transaction details and proof of your attempt to resolve the issue.
4. Lodge a Formal Complaint with Safaricom
Call customer care or use the MySafaricom app to file a complaint. Safaricom can follow up on the transaction, but they cannot force a reversal without the recipient’s consent—so manage your expectations.
5. Consider Legal Action
If everything fails, escalate the matter through consumer protection channels or take it to court. It’s slower and may involve costs, but it puts legal pressure on the recipient.
Hard truth: if the money has already been withdrawn and the recipient refuses to return it, recovery becomes difficult. Your best defense is simple—always double-check the number before sending.
