A group of Kipsigis elders has explained why they believe the late Johanna Ng'eno should not be replaced by his wife as the Member of Parliament for Emurua Dikirr.
According to a video seen by jobsnews.co.ke, the elders argued that the community expects a leader with strong political energy and deep grassroots influence to take over the seat.
They claimed Ng'eno had built his reputation as a powerful and active political figure, qualities they believe must be matched by whoever succeeds him.
The elders said it would not be appropriate for his wife to automatically take over the position, noting that leadership in the community is not determined by family ties alone.
They added that the community would instead identify a capable individual from among the different clans and gradually groom that person for leadership.
According to them, once a suitable candidate is identified, elders would bless and support the individual to carry forward Ng'eno’s political legacy in the constituency.
They also cited the example of Musalia Mudavadi, who stepped into politics at a young age after the death of his father, the late Moses Mudavadi.
The elders noted that Mudavadi was only 24 years old when he replaced his father as a Member of Parliament, arguing that leadership succession should depend on capability and community approval rather than marital connection.
The remarks come amid ongoing debate in the region about who should succeed Ng'eno in the upcoming by-election.
