Government Moves to Strengthen TikTok Oversight to Boost Online Safety

Information, Communication and Technology Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo has announced plans to strengthen government oversight of TikTok as part of broader efforts to improve online safety.

Speaking at the TikTok Safer Internet Summit 2026, held from March 10 to March 11, Kabogo said the government is developing new measures to protect users, enhance cybersecurity, and promote responsible digital behaviour.

“To protect the gains, we need to address emerging digital challenges, including misinformation, online scams, harmful content affecting minors, cybercrime, and the protection of personal data,” Kabogo said.

The CS explained that improved user protection tools will help safeguard users from harmful content, online harassment, and scams. He added that the government plans to work closely with technology firms to make reporting systems more efficient and responsive.

Strengthening cybersecurity frameworks is another priority, Kabogo said, noting that the rise of cybercrime linked to digital platforms demands proactive detection and prevention measures to protect users and digital businesses.

Age verification systems are also set to be introduced to ensure minors are shielded from inappropriate content, while awareness campaigns will educate users about data privacy and digital literacy. This will help people understand how personal information is used online and how they can protect themselves while using social media.

Kabogo highlighted that social media platforms, including TikTok, are playing an increasingly significant role in fostering digital creativity, innovation, and economic opportunities, especially for young people. The summit brought together policymakers, regulators, technology leaders, and civil society organisations from across Africa to discuss the challenges and opportunities of online platforms.

The planned measures are expected to make TikTok safer, encourage responsible digital engagement, and ensure that the platform continues to serve as a space for innovation and economic growth.

“Protecting users, especially minors, is key. We want a safe, secure, and inclusive digital environment for all,” Kabogo concluded.
