A postmortem has confirmed that 16-year-old Form Three student Silvester Muigai died from a single gunshot wound to the head. Authorities linked the death to the June 9, 2026 protests in Nanyuki, Laikipia County.
The report showed that experts recovered a small-arm bullet from Muigai’s skull. Investigators handed the bullet to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) for further examination.
Muigai reportedly joined the streets around 5:30 pm as protesters gathered in Nanyuki town. The demonstrations later turned chaotic, leading to clashes between police officers and protesters.
Running battles spread across parts of the town as officers confronted demonstrators. During the unrest, Muigai suffered the fatal injury and died at the scene.
The recovered bullet will help IPOA investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The probe will focus on claims that police officers may have been involved in the incident.
Authorities continue gathering information to establish what happened during the confrontation. The teenager’s death has increased scrutiny over police conduct during public protests.
Muigai was the firstborn in a family of four children. His death has left his family struggling with grief and financial challenges.
Reports indicate his single mother recently lost her home in a fire late last year. She has since appealed for financial and material assistance following the tragedy.
A relative previously told NTV that Muigai had received advice to avoid school during the protests. The family feared disruptions because demonstrators had occupied roads used by students.
Despite the warning, the teenager later found himself near the protest scene. His death has renewed calls for accountability and protection of civilians during demonstrations.
