Auditor General Refutes Social Media Claims on Ksh1.3 Trillion eCitizen Funds

Social media erupted with claims that Ksh1.3 trillion collected through the eCitizen platform is unaccounted for, allegedly citing Auditor General Nancy Gathungu. The posts went viral on Tuesday, sparking public outrage, particularly on X, with users demanding explanations from the government on the supposed missing funds.

However, the Auditor General’s office clarified through a statement dated March 4 that it has not released such information. "Our attention has been drawn to information circulating on social media citing the Auditor-General’s Report as the source of Ksh1.3 trillion allegedly lost or unaccounted for. This information is misleading as it has not emanated from the Office of the Auditor-General," Gathungu stated.

The eCitizen platform, which all government institutions now use to collect payments under law, was created to seal loopholes that previously allowed revenue losses due to corruption. Ksh1.3 trillion represents approximately 30.7 per cent of the 2025/2026 national budget, which totals Ksh4.239 trillion. The amount could fund the entire 2025/2026 education budget, Ksh701.1 billion, for nearly two years.

Social media reactions were immediate and dramatic. One user wrote, “Guys, do you know the Auditor General has said that 1.3T was withdrawn from the Treasury, and nobody knows where it landed? You heard just right, trillion guys.” Siaya County Senator Mong’are Okong’o also weighed in on his official X account, calling for accountability from the National Treasury. “1.3 trillion gone? Kenya’s Treasury is giving magic lessons – now it, now you don’t!” he tweeted.

The clarification comes about a month after the government disclosed that the platform collects up to Ksh1 billion daily. During a press briefing at KICC on February 9, Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura confirmed that the funds come from more than 23,000 government services on the eCitizen portal.

KNEC and government officials urge the public to verify information from credible sources before sharing, highlighting that social media claims about missing eCitizen funds are false and misleading. The platform continues to improve transparency, reduce leakages, and strengthen revenue collection across government services.
