Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has received a major political boost after a group of Mt Kenya leaders endorsed him as the region's spokesperson, its link to the national government, and President William Ruto's preferred running mate for the 2027 General Election.
The endorsement came during a regional leaders' meeting attended by elected leaders, local administrators, and political allies from the wider Mt Kenya East region.
The leaders said Kindiki has demonstrated loyalty to the Kenya Kwanza administration and has effectively represented the interests of the region within government.
Leaders Back Kindiki's Role
During the meeting, the leaders described the Deputy President as the most suitable figure to articulate the concerns of the Mt Kenya region and maintain close coordination between the region and the national government.
They also urged residents to remain united behind President Ruto's administration, arguing that continued cooperation would help secure more development projects for the region.
According to the leaders, Kindiki has played a key role in mobilising support for government programmes and strengthening communication between local leaders and the national administration.
2027 Running Mate Debate Continues
The endorsement comes amid growing national debate over President Ruto's running mate ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Some political leaders have recently questioned whether Kindiki will remain on the presidential ticket, while others have called for changes within the Kenya Kwanza coalition.
However, the Mt Kenya leaders who attended the meeting dismissed those suggestions and insisted that Kindiki remains the region's preferred candidate for the deputy presidency.
Kindiki Maintains Support for Ruto
The Deputy President has repeatedly stated that he remains committed to supporting President Ruto's re-election bid in 2027.
