Fresh divisions have emerged within the Jubilee Party weeks before the Ol Kalou by-election slated for July 16.
Former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu claimed that some senior party officials want Jubilee's candidate to withdraw from the race. He said certain leaders were unhappy with efforts by party supporters and aspirants to raise funds and campaign for the candidate.
Wambugu alleged that another attempt to pressure the candidate into stepping down could take place on Monday. He did not disclose the officials involved but warned that internal interference could hurt the party's chances.
The former lawmaker has repeatedly criticized sections of the party leadership over their handling of the contest. He previously questioned the party's commitment to retaining the seat after a Jubilee-branded campaign vehicle reportedly carried supporters linked to the Democracy for Citizens Party.
Wambugu has also accused some Jubilee insiders of advancing the political interests of Rigathi Gachagua. He argues that such actions threaten Jubilee's influence in the Mount Kenya region.
The Ol Kalou parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of David Kiaraho, who was elected on a Jubilee ticket.
The latest claims expose growing tensions within the party as campaigns for the by-election gather momentum. Party officials have yet to respond publicly to Wambugu's allegations.
