A Maasai herdsman in Kenya is in distress after a zebra herd overran his homestead, with the man alleging one zebra mated with his cow and produced a calf bearing visible zebra-like markings.

The herdsman, whose homestead borders open savannah, said the zebras moved into his compound and grazed freely among his livestock before the incident came to light.

He expressed shock upon noticing the unusual markings on the newborn calf, which he attributes to interbreeding between one of the wild animals and his cow.

"I was devastated. This has never happened before," the herdsman said, according to kenya.gossip.club, which first reported the story.

Wildlife experts note that zebroid offspring, born of a zebra and domestic cattle, are extremely rare and scientifically disputed in natural settings.

Encroachment of wildlife into Maasai pastoral land has been a longstanding concern across counties bordering game reserves, where boundary conflicts between herders and wildlife remain unresolved.

Kenya Wildlife Service has not yet issued an official statement on the incident.
