Detectives have launched investigations after a police officer linked to Mike Sonko was robbed of his firearm in Muchatha. The incident has raised concern over the weapon’s possible misuse.
The officer reported that the attack occurred on April 26 near Guango bus stop. He was riding home toward Banana when two men on a motorcycle confronted him.
The attackers struck him using a wooden object before speeding off. The officer and his rider attempted to pursue them, unaware they were walking into a trap.
After intercepting the suspects, a confrontation broke out as more riders joined the scene. The situation escalated quickly into a violent mob attack.
The officer fired a warning shot in the air in an attempt to disperse the group. The move failed, and the mob overpowered him, knocking him to the ground.
He sustained head injuries and lost a Beretta pistol loaded with 14 bullets, along with his mobile phone. The attackers fled the scene as he was rushed to hospital.
He later reported the matter at Karuri Police Station. Police visited the scene and began efforts to trace the suspects and recover the weapon.
In a separate incident in Murang’a County, another officer lost a rifle magazine containing 20 bullets during a clash with a group accused of stealing from Del Monte Kenya.
Authorities have increased security at the farm, where theft-related clashes have previously turned deadly. Investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
