The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has suspended all coalition talks with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), triggering fresh uncertainty over their political cooperation ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The decision was reached after a tense seven-hour meeting by ODM’s Central Management Committee, with party leaders saying they need time to reorganise and strengthen the party internally before proceeding with any negotiations.

ODM accused a section of senior UDA officials of making disrespectful remarks and attempting to weaken the party by allegedly luring its MPs and members. Acting Secretary General Catherine Omanyo said the party will not tolerate such actions and demanded respect from its political partner.

The party has also directed its members to stop campaigning for William Ruto’s re-election until the issues are addressed.

At the centre of the dispute is the zoning proposal, where ODM wants UDA to avoid fielding candidates in its strongholds. ODM is also reportedly pushing for the Deputy President position in any future political arrangement. UDA leaders have resisted these demands, deepening tensions between the two sides.

Party figures including Oburu Odinga, Gladys Wanga and Simba Arati are expected to seek an urgent meeting with President Ruto in a bid to resolve the standoff.

Meanwhile, ODM has announced plans to roll out nationwide youth conventions and mobilisation drives aimed at rebuilding its support base.

The suspension comes just weeks after both parties agreed to form a joint team for coalition talks, raising serious questions about whether the partnership can survive the growing mistrust.
