The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has issued a strong statement demanding respect from its broad-based government partner, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), amid rising tensions over zoning talks ahead of the 2027 elections.

During a press briefing led by party figures including Oburu Odinga, ODM accused a section of UDA leaders of making remarks that undermine the party and create unrest among its members.

Deputy Secretary General Catherine Omanyo, while reading the Central Committee’s resolutions, described the statements as unnecessary and harmful. She said ODM remains committed to its principles and will not tolerate actions that weaken its position.

The party also announced plans to intensify grassroots mobilisation, particularly in its strongholds. It revealed a schedule of nationwide rallies aimed at energising supporters, starting in Nairobi on April 20, followed by Mombasa on April 26. The initiative will cover at least 25 counties and focus heavily on youth engagement.

At the centre of the dispute is the zoning proposal, which suggests that ODM and UDA avoid fielding candidates in each other’s strongholds during the 2027 elections. The idea has sharply divided leaders from both sides.

Some ODM leaders, including Gladys Wanga and Junet Mohamed, support maintaining current seats, while others like Millie Odhiambo argue that zoning undermines fair competition.

On the UDA side, figures such as Phelix Jalang'o have also opposed zoning, warning that it could weaken democracy.

With both parties now taking firm positions, the disagreement signals growing strain within the political arrangement, raising questions about how the partnership will hold ahead of the next general election.
