The Luhya Elders’ Forum has raised concern over what it describes as the sidelining of leaders from the Western region within Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
The elders, drawn from all 18 Luhya sub-clans, met in Kakamega to deliberate on recent developments within the party following the death of Raila Odinga. They also emphasized the need for unity within the Luhya community.
Speaking after the meeting at Sheywe Guest House, the forum’s secretary, Peter Ludava, said they were troubled by the removal of Luhya leaders from key party positions. He noted that the community has been a major voting bloc for ODM since its formation and warned against the party being perceived as regionally dominated.
Ludava cited the removal of Godfrey Osotsi as deputy party leader and reports of plans to oust Edwin Sifuna as secretary general.
Forum vice chairman Noah Wekesa said the elders will convene a broader meeting of elected leaders to chart a way forward, urging unity among Luhya leaders.
He warned against public infighting and stressed the elders’ role in guiding leaders across political divides. Wekesa added that ODM must maintain a national outlook, cautioning against it being viewed as a regional outfit.
