Leon Malala, son of Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) Deputy Party leader Cleophas Malala, has declared his interest in contesting a parliamentary seat, signaling his entry into elective politics.
Addressing a gathering in Nyeri on April 11, he said his move is driven by a desire to amplify youth voices in leadership and push for generational change in governance. He argued that young people form the majority of the population and should therefore play a central role in shaping the country’s future.
He dismissed suggestions that his decision is influenced by family political background, insisting instead that it is motivated by what he described as gaps in leadership and representation. He called for a shift toward leaders who understand the challenges facing the younger generation, including unemployment and changing economic realities.
Leon further encouraged young people to become more politically engaged, saying their influence is growing and cannot be ignored. He noted that modern leadership must adapt to rapid technological and social changes, comparing the need for political renewal to regular system upgrades.
His announcement adds to the increasing number of young aspirants entering politics as competition for parliamentary positions intensifies ahead of the next election cycle.
