Nyandarua Senator John Methu has opened up about his relationship with President William Ruto, revealing that he was previously among the Head of State’s close political associates.
The senator made the remarks while responding to reactions triggered by his recent statements during a funeral event in Nyandarua County, which drew public attention and debate.
Methu maintained that his comments directed at the president were neither disrespectful nor inappropriate, insisting that he spoke within his mandate as an elected leader.
He stated that leaders have a responsibility to represent the views and concerns of the people who elected them, regardless of the setting. According to him, public gatherings such as funerals provide an opportunity to engage directly with citizens and communicate pressing issues affecting them.
The lawmaker also noted that he has been attending numerous funerals across his constituency, where he interacts with residents and listens to their concerns. He said such engagements have shaped his decision to speak openly on matters affecting the public.
Methu emphasized that leadership requires courage and accountability, adding that elected officials must not shy away from addressing national issues. He warned that fear of authority weakens the constitutional oversight role assigned to Parliament.
His remarks come at a time when political discourse continues to intensify, with leaders increasingly taking bold positions on governance and accountability.
