Duke Mainga has cut ties with the United Democratic Alliance and announced a bid for the Bomachoge Borabu parliamentary seat. His move signals a shift in local political dynamics ahead of the 2027 elections.
Mainga, once aligned with William Ruto, said a growing disconnect between national politics and local priorities influenced his decision. He positioned his new path as a response to voter concerns on the ground.
He revealed that the turning point came after he was heckled while urging residents to respect the President during a burial in Kenyenya. He said the incident forced him to reflect on his political direction.
The youthful politician, also known as Echate, is wrapping up his tenure as chair of the Commodity Fund. He previously served as sports executive in Kisii County.
His entry into the race sets up a competitive contest. He is expected to face incumbent MP Obadiah Barongo and former MP Zadock Ogutu.
Mainga’s move comes amid rising influence of Fred Matiang’i in the region, which has triggered political realignments. Analysts expect shifting alliances in Kisii as leaders reposition.
He previously contested the seat at 24 but lost. He now says he has gained experience and understands local issues better.
Mainga has promised to prioritise roads, healthcare, education, and youth empowerment. He also criticised what he described as stalled development in parts of the constituency.
His exit from UDA follows recent tensions with party leaders in Kisii. He accused some of arrogance and detachment from voters, urging leaders to focus on service and accountability.
