Osotsi made the claim on Saturday, October 4, during the unveiling of the new political party associated with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.
Osotsi Details Rapid Membership Growth
According to Osotsi, the party experienced an unusually rapid increase in membership shortly after registration opened.
He said more than 600,000 people had signed up within approximately two hours, describing the response as significant for a newly launched political outfit.
Osotsi further claimed that the party was forced to stop the registration process after the large number of people attempting to join.
The senator did not provide a detailed breakdown showing how the 600,000 registrations were distributed across the counties or whether all the registrations had been independently verified.
Sifuna’s Party Seeks National Support
The Equitable Party was unveiled as Sifuna and his allies seek to establish a new political vehicle ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The party has presented itself as a national political organisation and has encouraged Kenyans to register through its membership platform.
The reported surge in registrations comes as political parties begin positioning themselves ahead of the next election, with politicians seeking to build nationwide support and grassroots structures.
However, the 600,000 figure remains a claim by Osotsi and has not been independently confirmed by the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties.
The distinction is important because online registration figures announced by political parties do not necessarily amount to officially verified party membership.
Osotsi’s claim nevertheless gives an indication of the level of interest the new party says it has generated since opening its membership registration.
