Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki has been elected the new chairperson of the Council of Governors (CoG), taking over leadership from Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi. Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka has been elected deputy chairperson following a full council meeting held at a Nairobi hotel on Monday, October 12, 2026.

Njuki previously served as the council’s vice chairperson and will lead the governors for an initial one-year term. Abdullahi is leaving the position after serving two terms as the council’s chairperson.

Why the New Leadership Will Serve One Year

Njuki and Lusaka will each serve for one year under the leadership arrangement announced after the meeting. Although the council’s leadership positions allow another one-year term, both governors are serving their second terms in office and are expected to retire by August 2027.

Their departure from elective office means they will not be eligible for re-election to the council’s top positions. The new leadership will therefore serve during a period when counties will continue engaging the national government on devolution and other shared concerns.

Abdullahi Calls for Support for Successors

In his farewell remarks, Abdullahi thanked fellow governors for supporting him during his time at the helm of the council. He urged them to extend the same cooperation to Njuki to ensure a smooth transition.

Abdullahi said his work as chairperson would not have been possible without the support of his colleagues. He also asked the governors to stand behind the incoming leadership as it takes over the council’s responsibilities.

Lusaka Pledges to Work With Njuki

Lusaka congratulated Njuki after the election and pledged to support him in the new leadership arrangement. The Bungoma governor said he would not divide the council for personal political interests.

His remarks came after he also contested the chairperson position before being elected deputy. The new team is expected to coordinate the governors’ collective agenda as counties continue addressing development priorities and issues affecting devolution.
