Hassan died on Monday, September 7, 2026, at around 8:00 am while receiving treatment at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar.
The death was announced by Tanzania’s Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi.
In a statement to Tanzanians, Ndejembi said Hassan had been receiving treatment for heart-related complications.
“Fellow citizens, it is with great sadness that I inform you of the death of Honourable Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Honourable Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan,” Ndejembi said.
The Vice President said Hassan had died at the Zanzibar hospital where he was undergoing treatment for heart disease.
“I extend my condolences to the Honourable President, his family, relatives and friends, and all Tanzanians on this loss,” Ndejembi added.
He said funeral arrangements had already begun in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar.
The announcement comes as the Tanzanian government and the public mourn the death of the President’s husband.
Further details about the funeral arrangements are expected to be released by the family and government.
