Omondi was arrested on Monday, September 7, 2026, by plain-clothes police officers at the Kenya National Archives.
Footage from the scene showed officers handcuffing the activist before placing him inside a police vehicle. Omondi was heard asking the officers why he was being arrested and where they were taking him.
The officers did not immediately respond to his questions.
Omondi's proposed reforms
The arrest came as Omondi continued his campaign for major changes to Kenya’s governance structure.
He is pushing for the number of counties to be reduced from the current 47 to eight regions.
The activist argues that the proposed changes would reduce the cost of running government.
His campaign also calls for the abolition of the Senate and the Women Representatives positions.
Omondi is further calling for the removal of nominated representatives and a reduction in the number of Members of County Assembly.
The proposals form part of his wider campaign to collect signatures from Kenyans in support of constitutional changes.

Omondi's arrest comes amid heightened security in Nairobi CBD, where police have been deployed as demonstrations and political activities continue.
NTV reported that anti-riot police officers were clearing parts of the CBD on Monday, with traders, matatu operators and other groups being ordered to leave.
Several protesters were also arrested as police moved to control gatherings in the city centre.
