Dangote Plans 1,000-Megawatt Power Plant at Lamu Refinery

Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote announced electricity generation plans at the Lamu facility on Friday. The refinery will produce approximately 1,000 megawatts of power for Kenyan and regional markets.

Dangote stated that 500 megawatts would be supplied directly to the Kenyan government. The electricity generation forms a crucial component of the overall refinery investment strategy.

Refinery Investment Becomes Gateway for Additional Business Opportunities in Kenya

Dangote described the refinery investment as an entry point for additional businesses nationwide. He emphasized that the refinery opening would attract numerous investors to Kenya's economy.

President William Ruto said the administration is backing the multi-trillion-shilling project completely. He emphasized that the refinery would elevate Kenya's industrial scale and economic capacity.

Government Secures Land for Lamu Refinery Construction to Begin

Ruto stated that his administration had already secured land for the project. The government has paved the way for construction to begin without further delays.

The Lamu refinery is projected to refine approximately 700,000 barrels per day. The facility will supply refined petroleum products to East and Central African markets.

Lamu Refinery Features Advanced Equipment Unavailable at Nigerian Facility

Dangote indicated that the Lamu project would feature equipment not available elsewhere. The facility will include a coker and a larger Residual Fluid Catalytic Cracker.

The project is being developed with Dangote's involvement and AFC support completely. Investment value is estimated between Ksh1.94 trillion and Ksh2.20 trillion for construction.

Dangote Group Shifted Project Location from Tanzania to Kenya Recently

The refinery was initially earmarked for Tanga in Tanzania before relocation. Dangote Group shifted the project to Lamu citing infrastructure, logistics and market considerations.

A GW70 onshore drilling rig valued at over Ksh2.6 billion arrived Friday. The rig docked at Kilindini Port after transport from Duqm Port in Oman.

Gulf Energy Plans Drilling Operations Beginning November 1, 2026 Completely

Gulf Energy E&P BV SEZ plans to begin drilling on November first. The company is targeting first-phase crude oil production for December 2026 completely.

Gulf Energy leased the GW70 rig from Great Wall Drilling Company completely. The equipment was transported aboard MV Transit Sedanka from Oman to Kenya.
