In a notice issued on Wednesday, August 11, NMK said it closed the mausoleum on Monday, July 20, 2026, and will keep it inaccessible to visitors until Friday, October 30, 2026.
Construction Works Prompt Closure
According to NMK, contractors are carrying out construction works aimed at improving the site.
“The National Museums of Kenya wishes to inform the general public and all our esteemed visitors that the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Mausoleum has been closed for construction works since Monday, July 20, 2026 until Friday, October 30, 2026,” the notice stated.
The museum advised tourists, researchers and other visitors to avoid travelling to the mausoleum during the closure period because officials will not grant public access until the works are completed.
Renovation Follows Government Funding
The closure follows the release of funds by the Ministry of Culture for the renovation and upgrading of the mausoleum.
The site, located in Bondo, Siaya County, serves as a key historical and cultural monument honouring Kenya’s first Vice President, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.
The mausoleum attracts both local and international visitors interested in Kenya’s political history and the legacy of the Odinga family.
NMK has not provided details on the specific upgrades being undertaken, but the institution says the works are expected to enhance the facility once it reopens to the public at the end of October.
