Murang'a Governor Irungu Kang'ata has officially joined the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP). His move ends months of speculation about his political future.
Kang'ata had earlier announced he would not seek re-election on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket. He recently associated himself with the Linda Mwananchi movement before settling on DCP.
Gachagua Welcomes Kang'ata
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua welcomed the governor to the party at his Wamunyoro residence. He described Kang'ata's entry as another milestone for DCP.
Gachagua said the party continues to attract influential leaders. He expressed confidence that DCP will keep expanding ahead of the 2027 General Election.
DCP Strengthens Its Numbers
According to Gachagua, the party now has a county governor, one Member of Parliament and three Members of County Assembly. He said the latest defection strengthens DCP's national presence.
The party recently celebrated victory in the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election. Its leaders say they now aim to secure more seats across the country.
Kang'ata's Political Journey
Kang'ata has belonged to several major political parties during his career. He won the Kiharu parliamentary seat in 2013 under The National Alliance (TNA).
He later joined the Jubilee Party and won the Murang'a Senate seat in 2017. He successfully contested the Murang'a governorship under UDA in the 2022 General Election.
Leaders Attend Wamunyoro Meeting
Several DCP leaders attended the event at Wamunyoro. They included Senator John Methu, Senator Mithika Linturi, Murang'a Senator Joe Nyutu, Kirinyaga Senator Kamau Murango and Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang'wa.
Kang'ata's move marks one of the highest-profile defections to DCP. The development adds fresh momentum to the party's expansion plans before the next general election.
