The Teachers Service Commission has reduced planned teacher promotions for this year significantly. Only 30,000 teachers will receive promotions instead of the earlier promised 50,000.

The announcement has shocked many teachers across the country. Educators had expected larger promotions after increased education budget allocations.

Acting CEO Eveleen Mitei revealed the decision on May 13 before Parliament’s Education Committee. She addressed concerns affecting the education sector during the session.

The reduction affects the post-July 2026 promotion cycle for teachers nationwide. Teachers now fear existing promotion delays may continue for several more years.

According to TSC, the current budget can only support 30,000 promotion slots. The final figure will also depend on vacancies created through retirements and resignations.

Teachers had expected 50,000 promotion opportunities after President William Ruto made earlier promises publicly. The government had also increased the promotion budget from Ksh1 billion to Ksh2 billion.

A Kenya National Union of Teachers official described the reduction as disappointing and unexpected. Teachers reportedly believed the extra funding would support more promotions.

Many educators continue complaining about stagnation within the teaching profession currently. Some teachers have waited many years without career advancement.
