The National Police Service (NPS) faces scrutiny after reportedly shooting a staff member of ODM’s acting Secretary General. The incident occurred during chaotic fuel price protests in Busia Town on Tuesday.

The deceased, Frederick Odiwuor, known as ‘Papa’, ran a barber shop in Busia Town. Witnesses said he went outside to report potential vandalism amid rising tensions and protests.

Locals described Odiwuor heading towards the police station as crowds gathered outside. Police allegedly opened fire during the confusion, hitting him first in the chest.

Bystanders claimed he tried to flee before a second bullet struck his left side near the heart. Residents rushed to aid him, but he succumbed to the injuries before help arrived.

Catherine Omanyo expressed deep sorrow over the death of her staff member. She said she is pursuing justice and coordinating with authorities to clarify the circumstances.

Residents condemned the alleged police action, describing it as excessive. Local leaders called for an independent investigation into the events that led to the shooting.

The protests followed nationwide unrest over rising fuel prices, with multiple towns experiencing demonstrations. Citizens warned the continued confrontations risk further casualties if security measures fail.

Human rights groups urged the police to provide explanations and accountability. The NPS has not issued an official statement confirming or denying the circumstances surrounding Odiwuor’s death.
