Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang'wa has dismissed reports claiming that Nyandarua Senator John Methu was arrested and charged with treason.

Speaking on Monday, April 13, Thang’wa confirmed that Methu was not in police custody and described the circulating claims as false.

He further alleged that the reports were being spread deliberately, linking them to the National Intelligence Service.

“Senator Methu is fine. NIS is just testing the waters and Kenyans’ patience. Kenya is ready,” Thang’wa stated.

The claims, which gained traction on social media, alleged that Methu was facing treason charges following remarks he made about President William Ruto.

Images shared online to support the claims showed Methu in an apparent confrontation with police officers. However, a reverse image search indicates that the photos were taken during an earlier incident in Kigumo, Murang’a County, where opposition leaders had been teargassed.

Despite the clarification, the reports had already sparked concern online, with some suggesting there was tension in Nyandarua County.

Methu has recently been under scrutiny following his remarks directed at President William Ruto. In a subsequent television interview, he maintained his position, stating that he was not intimidated and would continue to demand the delivery of development projects promised to his constituents.

Some Kenyans have since defended Methu, drawing comparisons to similar remarks made by William Ruto in 2022 while serving as Deputy President under Uhuru Kenyatta.

The incident highlights the continued spread of misinformation on social media, with authorities repeatedly urging the public to verify information before sharing it.
