Several learners are feared dead after a tragic incident at the Kapsabet School for the Deaf in Nandi County on Thursday, March 12, after a group of students reportedly fell into a septic tank within the school compound.
According to initial reports, an unknown number of learners fell into the sewage pit after stepping onto it while watching the motorcade of William Ruto pass by the area. The students had reportedly gathered near the roadside to catch a glimpse of the presidential convoy.
The school is located close to Kapsabet Girls' High School, where the President was expected to visit during his tour of the region.
Residents and members of the surrounding community were the first to respond after the incident, launching rescue efforts before police and emergency teams arrived at the scene. Several learners were pulled from the pit during the initial rescue attempts.
Those rescued were rushed to Kapsabet County Referral Hospital for treatment as authorities worked to account for all the affected students.
Preliminary reports circulating online indicated that at least 11 students may have died in the incident. However, the figure had not been independently verified at the time of publication.
Emergency response teams and security officers remained at the scene as rescue operations continued. Authorities were also working to determine the exact number of learners involved and the circumstances that led to the tragedy.
The incident has drawn concern from members of the public, with many calling for thorough investigations into the safety conditions within the school compound and the events that led to the collapse or exposure of the septic tank.
Officials are expected to release more details once rescue operations are concluded and the affected learners are accounted for.
