Gunfire erupted in Kisumu in the early hours of Wednesday, March 11, after Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) Patron and Nairobi gubernatorial candidate Irungu Nyakera allegedly fired shots into the air to scare off attackers who had raided his hotel.
Nyakera claimed that over 100 armed individuals stormed his hotel at the Lake Basin Development Mall, assaulting staff, tying up a female security guard, and causing extensive property damage. Speaking on X, he said he was present at the hotel during the attack and fired twice in the air to disperse the intruders, whom he alleged were linked to political rivals.
“At 5am today, over 100 goons attacked my hotel, damaging property and injuring staff, including tying up the security lady. Upon hearing the commotion, I fired into the air as they fled,” Nyakera stated. He added that he had requested assistance from the area OCS, who failed to respond, prompting him to warn that he would shoot anyone entering his property without authorization.
Nyakera also alleged that similar attacks had occurred three weeks earlier, during which key merchandise was stolen and staff were temporarily locked out. He further linked some government officials to the incidents, claiming he had been instructed to vacate the premises due to his opposition affiliation.
“Upon reporting to security agencies in Kisumu, I was informed that a PS directed I could not remain a tenant in a government building because I belong to DCP. The Nyanza Region DCI boss also indicated that the PS had personal interests in the property,” Nyakera said.
The former PS insists the attacks are politically motivated, but the government has not issued an official response to his allegations. The events raise serious concerns about security for opposition figures and the potential misuse of influence to intimidate tenants and business owners.
