Kindiki's Plan to License Busaa, Muratina and Other Traditional Brews

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki says traditional drinks that pass KEBS checks will receive licences. He made the announcement on Wednesday, October 21, in Nairobi.

He spoke to security agencies at his Karen residence. Compliant brewers will soon be able to trade without fear of arrest.

Which Drinks Qualify

Muratina, linked to the Kikuyu community, and busaa, made from grains in Nyanza and Western Kenya, are among the drinks affected. These brews form part of the country's cultural heritage.

Producers must still meet several safety and quality standards first. Only those who satisfy the requirements will qualify for formal licensing.

New Law Against Cartels

The government has finalised legislative proposals to punish makers, distributors, and enablers of dangerous alcohol. Kindiki says these groups supply drinks laced with harmful chemicals.

The proposed law would let authorities seize assets and confiscate cartel funds. Officials would spend the money on addiction rehabilitation programmes.

Raids in Ten Days

A multi-agency team has carried out nine raids against illicit ethanol in ten days. It has also launched 116 other operations against illegal brews.

Kindiki says these operations show the government's resolve to finish the job. He insists the crackdown will continue until dangerous drinks disappear from the market.

Permanent Coordination Centre

The government has opened a permanent coordination centre at Harambee House Annex. Agencies fighting illicit alcohol and drugs now work together from one place.

Officials will release a framework next week for involving local communities. Kindiki says regulators and enforcement agencies now coordinate far better than before.

Why the Crackdown Matters

Unsafe alcohol has caused poisoning, serious illness, and deaths across Kenya for many years. The government says it wants to protect citizens from these dangers.

Kindiki says the state is not fighting legitimate businesses or the industry. He says it is protecting the nation from collapse.
