Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has announced a new strategy aimed at helping the opposition agree on one presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election.

Speaking after the High Court ruling on his impeachment case, Gachagua said he will temporarily scale down political rallies and focus on consultations with supporters and opposition leaders.

He revealed that after a planned visit to Western Kenya, where he intends to meet leaders including Cleophas Malala and Eugene Wamalwa, he will return to his Wamunyoro home for 45 days of discussions.

According to Gachagua, the meetings will bring together elders, youth representatives, professionals, religious leaders, and other stakeholders to help identify the most suitable opposition candidate to face President William Ruto in the 2027 election.

He said a team of about 60 advisers had recommended that he shift attention from political mobilisation to building opposition unity.

Gachagua argued that opposition leaders now need to focus on agreeing on one candidate rather than holding separate campaigns. He maintained that a united front offers the best chance of challenging Ruto in the next presidential race.

The former deputy president also insisted that he remains eligible to run for the country's top seat, noting that legal processes related to his impeachment are still ongoing.

However, he said personal ambition should not stand in the way of opposition unity.

Gachagua explained that if consultations identify him as the preferred candidate, he will begin building nationwide support. If another leader emerges, he pledged to back that person and rally his supporters behind the joint candidate.

He added that opposition unity remains his main priority as preparations for the 2027 election continue.
